Filmmakers, critics and film buffs donned their ski-wear last weekend and journeyed to the snowy peaks of Park City, Utah for the annual Sundance Film Festival
One of the largest independent film festivals in the world, Sundance works to promote and support the work of independent storytellers with an action packed program of film screenings, panels and presentations.
Included in this year’s program were two films graded by The Mill’s team of acclaimed colourists as well as a striking six second film, created by Mother and Lisa Gunning of White Label in collaboration with The Mill, to highlight the impact of climate change.
The debut of these films at Sundance comes hot off the back of Mill Colour’s latest expansion into Digital Intermediate (DI)
work for feature length indy projects.
THE YELLOW BIRDS:
Directed by Alexandre Moors with cinematography from Daniel Landin, The Yellow Birds
is a moving Iraq war drama based on a novel by Kevin Powers. Shot in the dusty hills of Morocco, the story follows the lives of two young soldiers as they battle with the emotional trauma of war.
DP Daniel Landin flew to New York to work closely with Mill Colourist and Head of DI Damien Van Der Cruyssen
on the grade. “Working with Daniel was a great pleasure,” says Damien, “The look of the movie was inspired by photojournalism from Iraq war, and both Alexandre and Daniel wanted to achieve a hyper real photography feel.
The war scenes lent on a hot, warm feel and we balanced all the homeland scenes to feel cooler. We always worked to avoid an over-stylized look, keeping the imagery beautiful and real. The Garden of Eden that becomes Hell.
GIVE ME FUTURE:
DAWN OF THE DEAF:
Dawn of the Deaf
is a 12 minute short with a unique perspective on the zombie apocalypse. Directed by Rob Savage and graded by Chicago based Mill Colourist Matt Osborne
, the film tells the story of a small group of deaf people must band together to survive when sonic pulse infects the hearing population.

, the new documentary following Major Lazer's massive concert in the island nation of Cuba.
The film which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival documents "Cuba's burgeoning youth movement, fusing exhilarating performance footage with authentic stories of cultural and political shifts in a country on the precipice of change."
THE HIGH DIVER:
Climate change was king at this year’s festival with the screening of An Inconvenient Sequel, the sequel to Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth released in 2006.
Working in collaboration with Mother, The Mill helped develop one of 10 six second shorts, that were screened throughout the festival to raise awareness about the detrimental impacts of climate change.
‘The High Diver’ employed a combination of CG and Live Action, with The Mill’s VFX team creating a CG pool, trees, water and planters before seamlessly comping these elements together alongside matte paintings of the contrasting lush green and stark arid environments. The diver itself was the only live action element captured on film.
Directed by Lisa Gunning out of White Label, the powerful six second short displays the potential effects that climate change will have in Los Angeles between 2017 and 2040.
